You can try tampons today. Get the lowest absorbancy there is at first, usually the "teen" or "light" kind. You may need the "regular" ones depending on how heavy your flow is. Plastic applicator ones seem to be easier to insert. Make sure to follow the directions on insert and push it up as far as you can with the applicator. Don't be afraid to get a little messy, that's what soap and water are for.
For the first few cycles of using tampon I'd suggest wearing a "back up" pad until you get used to how heavy your flow is and know when you need to change the tampon. I still do (i'm 23 and have had mine since I was 12) because sometimes a clot gets through or I can't get to the bathroom right away when I need to change the tampon and the pad catches the overflow. You will have to change it about as often as you'd change a pad though. Don't worry about carrying pads and tampons in school! Get a little make up bag and put them in it. Make a habit of bringing that to the bathroom with you and no one will be the wiser. I kind of lucked out going to an all girls school, no one cared and everyone always had something if you needed it.
Relax, don't tense up. Some find it easier to insert while sitting on the toilet, some find it easier standing up. See what works best for you. And don't try pulling out a tampon you just stuck in. It will probably hurt since it's not saturated. You can if you have to but be prepared, take deep breaths and don't tense.

Practice is always a good thing no matter what the situation- yes you can try them out today and wear them the next day IF you are comfortable with them. AND you don't have to use them on yourself to practice. Get use to using the two finger hold with the one finger push (sometimes can be slippery-Yuck!) They do sometimes catch the clots, which should not be too big, the clots stick to the insert. Please do not wear more than 4 hours at a time there is a bacteral "problem" caused if you wear for too long. The box of Tampons should have a insert(paper) PLEASE read it. This problem happens alot more than you think!

I agree with most of these answers, but would recommend you stay away from scented ones. Dyes and scents added to any product used in the genital area can be bad. You'll have to experiment with which tampon works for you: applicator type, size, absorbency, etc. If you are close to an adult female, she can be of great help in giving advice on what to start with. Make sure you change it every 3-4 hours. You want to go with an absorbency that allows you to comfortably remove it after that amount of time, yet not allow for leakage. Again, don't try to remove a dry tampon, it'll hurt and you could tear. Until you find a size/fit that works for you, wear a panty liner--just in case! Tampons are great for comfort, ease of use, and if you're active/athletic, you don't have to worry about them shifting during your activity. Good luck!

It's probably easier to adjust to it right away. Don't know for sure because I started with pads. I do suggest wearing pant liners while using tampons. Since you just started you have no idea how heavy your flow may be. So you do not want to leak :(. And, you might wanna change it every 4-6 hours.

The first few times you wear a tampon you should wear a pad too. You have to learn the way it feels when it needs to be changed. It would me much more imbarrasing to bleed through, than getting caught with a pad.

I never got on with them, and you need to change them just as often as a pad. Plus, pads are on the whole, rather better for your health, a few women get really horrid reactions to tampons. I definately wouldnt try them for the first time at school, they always made me feel really sick and dizzy (no idea why) plus for some women they leak badly. Try them first at home where you can see how you get on.

I would use pads for a while because you need to know your flow and what absorbency tampon to get. If you don't have any time to change tampons you should not use them. Have you heard of TSS? it is a rare but deadly disease that is caused by wearing a tampon for along time.

I'm 19 i just switched to tampons last year, they hurt the first day, but after that its no problem, the best ones to get are tampax scented heavy duty since you just started recently. If you are a virgin ( not trying to be fresh with you or personal) but it might hurt more when you first start using them. I hope I helped

im 13 and have been wearing tampons since my second period. i prefer tampons to pads because you can't feel it coming out of you, and you don't have to change them that much at all. always wear a pantiliner w/tampon (in case of the dreaded leak). and i recomend a plastic aplicater in the junior size b/c they're so much easier to put in at first.
