The most important advantages are that it are quick, reliable and easy to use.
Mercury is a liquid metal that expands with temperatue, very simple. So when dealing with mercury thermometres there are no problems as to pressure, for example.
The only disadvantage is that it is hignly poisonous, so dont play around with thermometres

The bigest advantage is that a mercury thermometer does not ever need to be recalibrated after it's made. All other methods of measuring temperature (thermocouple, bimetal, spring, infrared, etc.) are all subject to errors due to drift, malfunction or other problems.
