stats from last season:
Paul Pierce: 26.8 points, 6.7 rebs, 4.7 assists, 1.35 steals, 0.43 blocks, 47% FG, 77% FT, 35% 3pointers, 39 minutes per game
Carmelo: 26.5 points, 4.9 rebs, 2.7 assists, 1.10 steals, 0.53 blocks, 48% FG, 81% FT, 24% 3pointers, 37 minutes per game
Pierce wins in 6 categories, and Melo only wins in 3 categories (but barely). Pierce has MUCH better rebounding/passing/stealing/ 3-point ability. The Truth is the better player.

Actually I don't care. I am a Celtic fan so am bias. As for this type question ruining basketball, that is " Humbug ". Things only get ruined if you take a negative attitude. I enjoy every basketball game I watch. I have favorite players on all teams and can usually find one team to root for. So we lost a game to Greece, so what. Life is a game of winning and losing, so be a good sport and forget it. Your question sparked comment and as you noticed, it sparked negative comments as well as a few positive ones. I thank the guy for doing his homework, that said Pierce is ahead in 6 categories.

Pierce is a better player but 'Melo is more talented. Melo is still young and I think he's gotten off to a slow start in his career. Last year he showed some signs of greatness but he's got more under the hood.

It is questions like this that have just RUINED United States basketball. Naturally, it is easy to make comparisons like this. Individual stats and so forth are something that people always like to look at. Let's look at a more important statistic shall we?
Championships. How many do either of these guys have between them? ZERO. So, without championships they will go the way of World B. Free. Who you ask? EXACTLY MY POINT.
The Micheal Jordan era was great for the NBA while Micheal was playing. UNFORTUNATELY, EVERYBODY thinks playing like Micheal did is the ONLY way to win! Everyone thinks that any teams best shooting guard, small forward or point guard must go for 30 points every night in order for their team to win.
THIS IS A DAMNED FARCE AND THE REASON WE ARE BIG FAT SORRY LOSERS IN INTERNATIONAL COMPETITION.
Teamwork will ALWAYS win out over INDIVIDUAL play in the long run.
So, to your question. The better player is the one that makes all his teammates "better". My vote is for Steve Nash.
