Yes i have dealt with stupid people at work, and not all of them customers- some were fellow staff. These people seem to think if you are in a low wage service job it gives them the right to treat you poorly, or like your stupid , when strangely enough if your doing the job you probably have an idea what your doing. The worst job i ever had was waitressing. Customers assume you are undereducated and stupid. Yea buddy, it' called putting up with morons to make university money, and I'd like to see you keep 20 orders straight, serve drinks, clean tables, answer phones, do bills , and take cash and keep a smile on my face. The one thing i learned while doing this job was to be kind. If a customer walked in that i hated to see (rude, cheap, indecisive, or unfriendly) I started to go out of my way to be nice and helpful, even sliding them an extra treat to make them feel special. I was amazed to find that my attitude toward them changed, and i didn't see them the same way. And they usually came around too.

I work in customer service and I have dealt with all those type of people you mentioned above. I use to think that the whole world was going completely mad but, dealing with the public has also taught me to appreciate life and be thankful for what I have. Take the time to listen because,I learned that everybody has a story and those stories shaped the lives of these people.

No one is stupid. As far as customers are concerned, and employee.
I would say some customers, are either greedy, want everything free, at huge discounted rates (because they think the world owes them?) uneducated, or they have a chip on their shoulder for whatever reason, and if you look at them could call you racist or prejudiced. There are some customers who specifically come in looking for lawsuits or tell their kids to run in the store so they can get in an accident and collect $$$, therefore there are criminals everywhere.
Now, there are nice law-abiding customers and plenty of them so hence there are the good and the bad. Just work with them, keep your cool, and just have understanding and hear them out.
Example if you see a 400lb lady looking in the skinny petite section looking for clothes or trying to return them back without receipts or tags, go with your gut instincts. She either stole them, or tried to sell them elsewhere, and is trying to get $$$ back from the store. The truth is right there in front of you, and what goes goes. Just be AWARE.

I work at a medical bookstore. We also sell copies of Microsoft office at the back desk of the store. a lot of times my co worker and i will be at our desk and see people looking at the books real funny like they really can't figure something out. we then ask them for help. turns out most of them are looking for Microsoft office in the ob/gyn section for some odd reason.

Never say *sshole after a conversation with one. I used to work with a guy who used to hang up the phone after a particularly bad one and say that.
One fine day he missed and the customer heard him. He got called on the carpet.

I worked for Toys R Us for 15 years and I've had my share of the all fuzzy and warm customer. I finally learned the secret to staying calm, people will do their best to get you upset, because that's usually when they get what they want. They way I see it is that you don't get paid enuff for customer's to get you all riled up, so why let it bother you? Simple as that, when you feel yourself getting irrittated pass the buck to someone else who get's paid to take the abuse. Their goona be the one's to make the decision. That's what they get paid to do. You gotta let it slide because it's not worth your aggravation and health and stability to allow people to get your goat! You follow the rules of the employer and whatever policies they have posted and take it from there.

Go with the flow...............listen, acknowledge, be informative but brief, repeat if necessary..........or call security or police in case of potential danger........don't allow situations to escalate..... call in the boss or supervisor if you are "stuck"....and never assume things about people........someone who appears to be "drunk" may in fact have cerebreal palsy for example.......
Just deal with facts and be helpful.
Example.....I went to my local gas station to get a car wash (only automatic car wash in the area) which is supposed to open at 7A.M.....I was there at 7 A.M.........employees had no idea how to turn it on.........I was a disgruntled customer and voiced my opinion about it to them..........I plan to talk to the manager to change this situation in future......this was frustrating to me.....as a customer.....was I a stupid customer, or did I have a valid reason for being "disgruntled"? I was also impatient due to time restrictions
There are two sides to Customer Service........one side is YOUR JOB.......smiles

working in retail these many years i have found there is no relief from stupid customers. It is sort of like a trip to the dentist. you have to do it, and its not very pleasant, but at least it is not all the time.

allow me to correct you!
These example you give are not stupid people they just know that the person serving them is rude and ignorant you are speaking of profiling people you should not be in your field so do something you wont be in contact with the general pubic with you're the problem you don't have people skills!
your stuck seems to me in a job or career you have no skills to be in at all, your attitude and prejudice is why you are so miserable something good will come of this is you just leave your field that your in now!
you should be skilled enough to be able to handle any situation that comes your way and if you don't know this to be true asked any airline customer service Representative ! they are very high skilled with public customer service and solving world wide peoples issues and you gripe for your inadequacies
not at all is this position for you!
