The nicotine in cigarettes is a stimulant and has long been known to have a laxative effect on some people by acting on the digestive system (NOT the brain). It affects the bowel in much the same way as caffeine does.

When you give up smoking (which is still a good idea!) you may find that you suffer from bouts of constipation. Try to eat fibre-rich foods and lots of fresh fruit and vegetables; prunes are good, drink 8 glasses of water a day and carry out some gentle exercise to stimulate your bowels. Some say that eating chocolate helps too.
