I think it is a form of sublimation. Organized sporting events are seen as "socially acceptable" while performing these behaviors on your own in public would get you jail time.

Because at our core we are still a predator carnavore species and enjoy bloodsports as it satisfies the cravings for activities we are no longer allowed to engage in.
