I believe it is a blend of stuff like wood chips, polymers, and concrete. If this is what it is, it is in fact far more durable than wood - especially the wood that is around today. The real wood around today is genetically altered for fast growth. This makes the wood terribly porous and not such great quality. If you are going to use this for exterior, it is a far superior product than all but the most expensive wood. I am not sure, but the drawback MAY be that you have to use special fasteners - and it may be difficult for screws not to "thread" the holes.

HardiPlank, as I know it, costs about $3 to $3.25 a square foot installed, including painting, since even though it is repainted, the finish can be affected if the HardiPlank is dragged along the job site.
Hardiplank consists of cement(supposedly the best grade), finely-ground sand, natural cellulose (wood) fibers, and water are combined and cured through a proprietary manufacturing process into the most durable siding material on earth.
This product is supposedly very good for many reasons and one of them being termites do not like it

HardiPlank and HardiPanel are brand names for fiber cement siding manufactured by James Hardie Building Products. The siding is made from portland cement mixed with ground sand, cellulose fiber, and other additives.
Fiber cement siding can resemble stucco, wood clapboards, or cedar shingles, depending on how the panels are textured. Fiber cement is more durable than wood or stucco, and is also fire resistant.
Although more expensive than vinyl, fiber cement siding is considerably less expensive than wood. Fiber cement has become popular because it requires little maintenance and can have a natural, wood-like appearance.

Hardiplank is essentially press-board with concrete. It is much more durable than wood. It is not as forgiving though.

"A better question is why are there homes in tornado prone regions of the US?" Same reason people build homes next to rivers, a long the coast, in an earthquake zone, in an area prone to fires, mudslides, rockslides, blizzards, flood prone areas etc. There are precious few area's in the U.S. where natural disasters don't or can't strike. "Why are homes in tornado-prone US regions made of wood?" Probability and costs. The "odds" that a single home will be "hit" by a tornado is significantly lower than the odds that a house will be hit by a hurricane or experience earthquake damage. For a home to be "tornado-proof," the walls, roof, windows, doors and garage doors would have to be "missile-resistant" to halt penetration by flying debris, and the connections of the structural elements would need to be capable of withstanding 250 mph wind pressures. Additionally, the connections for long-span roofs and tall walls to transfer the loads induced by a 250 mph wind would have to be 7½ times stronger than those routinely required by today’s codes.
