Actually neither is right but that's because the Internet has no physical shape. Picture a huge spider web. If the Internet had a shape it would more closely resemble an endless spider web. Computers are stuck along this spider web at every point with bigger, more powerful computers directing the traffic and keeping up with information.

The Internets is actually little blocks of computer data carried around by InterElves through a dark, endlessly complex forest. The information starts on one side of the forest, when the Elf reaches the other side, the information gets to you.

For instance, you send an email to a friend. That email is handed to John Elf in the form of a glowing pink cube of data. John Elf has to run through the forest to the other side.

When John reaches the other side, he hands off the pink cube to Melinda Elf. Melinda loads the cube into your friend's computer and your friend gets your email. There is one Elf for each person on the Internet.

This all happens far too fast for the human eye to percieve. Also, the InterElven world can fit, in its entirety, on the head of a pin; so it would be difficult to view, even under a high-powered microscope.

Neither is right, but your mom is closer.

The internet has no actual "physical" appearance, only a virtual one, but some experts have tried to draw the Internet (it looked like a nebula composed of dots)

I will say tubes cause put it like this, the net is used for different purposes so if is music, thats one tube, if is for chatting, another tube, e-mail, another tube, hacking another tube etc.
