Okay, well, I just got my first period and I have no idea on what type of pad I should use. I don't have a mom because she died and my dad doesn't want to talk about it, so I am totally confused.

In addition to the great suggestions above to use a pad with wings (a lifesaver!) I have to add something. Do not use pads with scents! They aren't that great for you, and really, the odor of period and chemical perfumes mixed togther is worse than just the normal period blood smell (which is comepletly normal, don't worry about it). Definately use a longer pad at night.

You may want to buy a small pack of unscented baby wipes too to help clean things up when you are changing your pad and don't have access to a shower or don't want to shower again. They even come in travel packs now too so you can keep some in your school bag. No one has to know what they are for and if anyone asks, it's to clean your hands if they get dirty and you aren't near a sink.

You can even try those "teen" tampons too if you want to. If you're not comfortable with that, it's not a big deal. Some women never are. Stick with the unscented here too, and never use a higher absorbancy than you think you need. Most women are "regular" flows.

Best of luck and hope we all have helped a bit.

Talk to another woman that you know and trust, or some friends who already have their periods if you need some questions answered. Find pads that say "extra coverage," "ultra thin," and "with wings" on the packaging. Or ask someone from the drug store for advice. I would not advise getting scented pads because their scent is unlike any deodorant or perfume out there, so its like screaming "I'm menstruating!"
Instead, be sure to shower every day during your period, and don't douse yourself with perfume, but use a bit and a good anti-perspirant. Should be enough to keep the smell down.
If or when you decide to switch to tampons, get multipacks which have three different kinds in one box, so you can use the level of absorption that is good for heavy, medium or light days.
Follow the insertion instructions, and when you put it in, point the tampon for your lower back, its usually the angle that the tampon goes in at most easily.

Aww .. YOu do have a mom, she's just not with you. I have lost my mother too, and its not easy especially with your body changing like it is and you need a woman to talk to about these things.

Ask your aunt or older sister if you ever have any questions about these things!

But, i think Always with wings are good. Depending on how heavy it is you should stick with ones labeled for medium to heavy flow. I always get wings too because you can leak on your undies and thats a mess... and not fun to clean up. :) And at night you may want to use something a little heavier and long because you aren't able to notice how much you bleed at night. I usually bleed a lot but it doesn't come out until i wake up and stand up in the morning... Gross, but true. So for day go with a medium flow ultra thin pad with wings. At night, use something long and thick (it won't be uncomfortable if you are sleeping, and you will get used to it.) Good luck!

Do you have an aunt or a grandma that can talk to you about it? How about your friends or their moms? If you don't feel comfortable with that then buy a package of Always thin maxi pads or Stayfree thin maxi's and see how you like them, you are just going to have to try different brands to see how you like them. I suggest sticking to the thin maxi's though, they are much nicer than the thick pads.

I suggest talking to someone that you trust a lot that wants to help you with your problem. There are a lot of pads that fits a women's need when she has her period but I don't know if I can help you with that. Good luck!

try something thin at first.... not a pantyliner, but a maxipad that is thin so it's comfortable and discreet..... the wings are good... tell your dad to loosen up, this is what parenting is all about.
