The first answerer was correct. The NFL is not set up the same way MLB is, with a separation between National and American. In the NFL, the AFC and NFC play each other regularly. The Colts are in the AFC SOUTH and play 4 teams from the NFC this year, the Giants, Redskins, Cowboys, and Eagles. Their only poorly thought out and used rules (when it comes to scheduling and division play) kick in during playoffs when they determine who goes and who doesn't.

Each pro team plays a number of games against the other conference each year. This year, all the teams in the AFC North with the Colts will play all the teams from the NFC East with the Giants. It just happened to work out that the Colts and the Giants will play each other first (good scheduling, huh?)
