The advantage -- you can call for help if needed, people can find you if they need to.
The disadvantage -- People can find you if they need to. But you don't have to answer the phone. That's what caller ID is for!
Basically, I use my phone as a tool for needing to ask a question of someone when I am out -- like, Can I get you something from the store..and such.
But then I get pesky phone calls from someone I might not want to talk to every now and then. I just let it go to the voice mail and I can always say that I didn't get reception or hear my phone ring.
Another good thing is when I am shopping, I can go in one direction -- husband can go in the other -- and we call each other when we are done to find each other.
Hope I helped!

advantage = can be contacted anytime, can be a good gadget to deal with boredom, like mp3 in mobile phones these days, or camera that can capture images or videos if there is a special event or need.
disadvantage = flat battery, signals that may affect some stereo, annoying due to ringing of the phone in public, accidents such as using mobile phones in cars while driving
hope it helped
