I will tell you why. Because you are supposed to and they work harder than most people.

We are not your servent but you do provide an experience for diners. Next time pay attention to what your server does for you and all the tables around you.

Also if all of you cheap asses want to do away with tipping than you will be paying through the nose for the food you eat. I make 20-30 dollars per hour and would never work for less than that hourly. Noone would. The job is way to demanding.

If you can't afford to pay your bills or tip your server than you shouldn't be going out to eat.

There are people who go out to eat and are complete pigs. Appetizers, entrees, desserts, and drinks and run their server all over for them. Then make comments like I can't afford to tip. Then why are you spending your money on WAY TOO MUCH food.

JUST IMAGINE IF SERVICE DID NOT DEPEND ON TIPS!!

What kind of experience would you get when you went out to eat.

I understand that there are many servers that do not do a good job.

I can only speak for myself. I pride myself on going above and beyond to take care of my guests.
Why do I do this? It is not out of the goodness of my heart. I do this because I am hoping for a good tip.
I can't say that I would do anything beyond taking the order and bringing the food and drinks if I didn't get tipped.

I learned in school and from my parents to tip generously. It is an American tradition, based on the fact that we are all equal in this country, and the tip is to compensate the server for going above and beyond the call of duty in being willing to temporary assume this service role.

Good service is worth a fortune, as it enhances the dining experience and makes everyone happy. Compliments to the server are worthless; he or she KNOWS already that they are a good asset to the establishment and that they create a great eating experience for their customers. This is a time where it's important to vote with dollars.

I will drink water and even forgo dessert to ensure that I have sufficient cash to leave a nice tip, especially for exceptional service. I make sure that the entire party leaves 20% to 25% at lunch or dinner, more at breakfast since breakfast tabs are often much lower, and the price of the food doesn't reflect the effort expended.

To me, this is a cost of dining out, and gives me one of the few opportunities to directly compensate someone for doing a good job.

I don't feel comfortable tipping, however I do, 10% MAX. I think the money you make for a wage/salary should be enough. How much do you tip? I hear waiters/waitress (servants) are the worst! Do you think restroom cleaners do less of a job? They don't ask for a tip. They probably get paid the same as you. I pay for the service at my table not at someone else's!! So I don't give a rats a s s how many tables you wait on or how long your shift is. I suppose if you could find another job you would, so don't complain its your lot in life to serve and clean up after the rich. Ta.

Please tell us what you do beyond bringing an order to the table? I think that's implied in your job description. You probably debate how nice you should be with the prospects of getting a tip. I think I will ask my next server what tip he/she expects. Then ask what additional service (above and beyond) they intend of providing for that tip.

For starters, this isn't a question, just a rant. And whatever, if that's what you want to do that's fine. However, I think both sides of this arguement are way too broad. Yes, people should tip their servers. HOWEVER, you should get services for it. There is no way I am going to have a waitress treat me like crap, and then leave her a hefty tip. Why would that make any sense? For example: Last night myself, and three friends went to a restaurant. Two of us got salads, one got a hamburger, and one got a chicken sandwich. We all had beer. Pretty simple order. However, when my friends chicken sandwich came it was covered in mushrooms and cheese. Now the waitress was NOwhere to be found, and didnt even come back until the rest of us were done eating. By that time, we didn't have beer for at least 10 minutes and were thirsty, and my poor friend hadn't even started her meal because she can't eat cheese!!! When the waitress came over, she didn't even apologize for putting the order wrong, and demanded to see the food to see if it was really wrong! What sort of service is that? In the end, my friend just told her to take it off the bill and we were leaving. Now, we still left her just under 15%, but why should we give her more like 18% or 20% like I normally would for a good waiter/waitress? Of course not. The tip somewhat has to be a reflection of what you're doing for your customers.

If they are rude, or ignore you they don't deserve a tip. I don't care how much they are making. I am not making a lot of money right now & i rely on tips as well. If they're in the customer service business then they should know that not everyone tips & not everyone has to tip. If they are nice & keep an eye out to see if the customer needs help i agree they should get a tip. But don't expect someone to tip somebody just because they're not payed well by the place they're working for. If this is the case they shouldn't be fussing at the people that don't tip they should be fussing at their bosses. If waiters & waitresses want to get payed more then they should try to find another job or get together & go on strike. Don't sit there & complain about the customers & how they are not tipping them well enough. They are not your employer.

I agree,my Mom waitressed and it's hard. I don't understand why they don't let them get minimum wage. People are such cheap skates anymore. I always tip based on service, even if the restaurant is busy and they only make it to the table a couple of times as long as they try I still tip well. That field of service is way underpaid!

o.k. got a little hostil there after the question. My mom is a waitress and she does work her butt off and besides that all you mentioned she has to declair a tip whether she makes it or not because the gvt. assumes all people tip the same which they do not she has worked at the same job for 25 years and unlike you she only makes min. wage because where she works it a cheap a.. place. anyway if the server throws the food at me and grunts I still tip them but not nearly what I do to a smiling gracious server

Was this a question or a rant?We eat out alot and MOST servers shouldnt be serving ayway! They don't replace drinks, plates ( we eat out a buffet places so everyone gets what they want and all for one price!) so, I have had the servers that don't replace drinks, are rude ( such as yourself!) too stupid to work, gossip, worry about makeup, who is ******* whom, the busboy is gay/cute/nice a$$,ect. Most servers are too stupid to hold the job to begin with. I know, all about lazy, stupid servers who do not work to their potential, and have had the honors to fire such as yourself. I was one, for over two years and grew up in the food industry,as my dad was a Master Chef.PPl like you make professionals like us, sick! You are a disgrace to the food industry and it is ppl like yourself that make some servers look bad,and why ppl like myself ( who expect excellent service, otherwise why eat out!?) do not tip! Most servers are great at what they do,and they work hard, but for you to rant like that, makes me wonder if I should just say home and cook! At least then, I can save my money! Servers tips should reflect how they serve and it should NOT be added to the bill! Some servers suck at their job,and those that work hard are prolly making up for those who don't ( sound like someone YOU know!?!?) You mentioned "they" however you did not include yourself in that category... Gee i wonder why?? Could it be that you do not work as hard as some of the other servers and just want a reason/place to *****? i think you need a prozac, and unemployment ,so you can rethink your answer!

well first of all it depends on the waiters service.if they are rude and arent friendly to the customers then they shouldnt get tipped so there are two sides to every story but if you are goiing out of your way to serve the people well then i agree with you that you deserve a tip. my personal thing is i always tip even if the service is lousy i just give less money to the waiter.

you answered your own question. really tho i always tip. it takes something catastrophic for me not to tip 15%. rudeness would definately do it. and i know the stereotypes, i get them too. I'm asian, and asian don't tip, so i get lackluster service because my server figures i'm not gonna tip. when that happens, even though i don't think they deserve it, they get the standard 15%. excellent service usually gets 25%. thats about as high as i go. anyhow it sucks and there's always gonna be people like that...but don't think your services go unnoticed. some people do see you're working hard.

I agree -- I used to work in the restaurant industry. People don't understand that tipped employees are only getting around $2.15/hr. Most of them are single mothers trying to support their children.
