In order for you to be able to become fluent in a foreign language, you must not only learn that language but think in that language as well. I do not translate everything to my mother tongue (Spanish) every time i'm talking or writing in a foreign language. The only thing I haven't mastered is counting quickly in other languages. Every time I learn a language I have to get used to the counting system (since every language has a different one) and thus I end up taking too long when I count in a language I am still learning. In this case I do have to count in either my mother tongue (Spanish) or in English (semi-mother tongue) and then translate it into the other language. An example of this is when I used to work at a 24-hour store in Japan and every time I counted the change I did it in Spanish and then I had to translate into Japanese and then tell the customer how much the change was. The funny thing was that when I counted in Spanish out loud, the customers looked at me as if I were an alien or something! good luck.
