Edmund Halley was an astronomer who did some clever mathematics based on observations of comets over many years. He worked out that there was one comet which seemed to reappear every 86? years so he predicted when it would next appear. He died before the comet reappeared but his prediction was spot on. After it did reappear it was named in his honor
