I just don't know... it's a nightmare trying to decide. My son wants to go to the Caribbean to explore his heritage.. he is mixed race.. but our family are not from Tobago but from Antigua. I explained that all the islands are very different so Tobago would be different to Antigua [The reason we are not going to Antigua is that I'd like to gong to a country that I've never been to before...]. We also thought of Tobago as it's a small island and don't want to go to St Lucia, Barbados, Bahamas, Bermuda or Caymans

Does anyone know if the weather is bad in the Caribbean in October and would we therefore have a miserable time?... and is Mauritius overhyped? Help..

I don't know about Tobago, but I know about Mauritius.

Try to stay on the West Coast - La Pirogue is a great hotel http://www.lapirogue.com/ . If you are rich, go to the East Coast, Touessrok... http://www.oneandonlytouessrok.com/ and if you are very rich, go to Royal Palm in the North: http://www.beachcomber-hotels.com/en/hotels/royalpalm/hotel.htm

There are golf courses, spas, even casinos... Water sports are generally free in the hotels. You can pay to learn scuba diving if you aren't PADI certified yet, and I am sure you and your son would enjoy the reefs in Mauritius, even if it's just snorkelling.

Mauritius is much more than just beaches, do visit:
Pamplemousses Botanical Gardens - North
Under Sea Walk (available at Grand Baie) - North
Chamarel/Black River Gorges - West
Ile aux Cerfs - Island off the East Coast
GrisGris/Telfair - South
Trou-aux-Cerf - Centre

So many places to see.

If you want to go shopping, the touristy places are at Grand Baie, but if you are interested in local stuff try the PortLouis market, or the Quatre Bornes Flea Market (I think it's open only on Wednesdays or Thursdays, please check).

Try local food, a must is the DhallPuri. You'll find many people selling this especially in the towns. It's a thin round dough stuffed with crushed peas. Generally, some curries or pickles are put in the centre of it and it is rolled and served. My mouth's watering just thinking about it...
