Igneous - from volcanos or from other molten rock inside the Earth. Basically it is lava or magma that has cooled and hardened to become rock. Examples: Granite, Pumice
Sedimentary - laid down as sediments in lakes, rivers and seas. This is usually in layers of sediment that have become compressed and hardened over time to become rock. Examples: Sandstone, Limestone
Metamorphic - Sedimentary rock that has been subjected to intense heat and/or pressure by volcanic or other geo-thermic processes so that it has changed (or metamorphosed) into something that more closely ressembles igneous rock. Examples: Schist, Gneiss
