It is a family name passed down for generations from my grandmother to myself. I was wondering if anyone knew of a site where I could research the name or had any information about the name. Thanks.

Tema was one of the sons of Ishmael, illegitimate son of Abraham. His father Ishmael befriended a tribe of Arabs(from the line of Noah) and he married and had 12 sons. Ishmael himself was not Arabic, obviously. But some people believe that Ishamel began the ethnicity of Arabic. This is not true because The men who Hagar met in the valley, which Ishmael later befriended, were already Arabic. Hebrew was Ishmael's native tongue, so it would be wise to say that it is Hebrew in origin. It can also mean "right" or "south". Also connected with Teman in the Middle East.

Tema is also the name of the land occupied by Tema's tribe (Tema means The Sount Country)
This land is probably the modern Teima, about 200 miles North of el-Medina.
Being that your background ethnicity is Jewish, I would believe that the name came from the meaning "Righteous", since the Tema described as Ishmael's son would not have had a positive place in Jewish history. Tema was already a Hebrew word. But it is more of an ancient word. There are other hebrew words now for "righteous".

The name 'Tema' means either righteous or palm tree. I would think this is a simplified meaning from when you family first started to pass it down.

Hi. I don't have any real help for you, but I think that is a lovely name. It sounds so haunting and beautiful. I am not sure I would even want to know where it is from. Maybe from the land of the faeries just like your picture!

I like it. It sounds Native American or Indo-European. I like it when people have unusual names, why should all of our names be the same? We should change it up every now and then. Not like the people do in Hollywood, but something different and new.

Are there any Polish connections as it is a surname over there. Sometimes, people had a mother's maiden name as a middle name.
