Steve Irwin was the Australian Naturalist and Croc hunter whose passion was to dispel fears of animals. He took lots of chances to be entertaining and also to show what these dangerous animals might do.
Last week he was filming on the Great Barrier Reef and was swimming behind a group of sting rays. When a large ray thrust his 8 to 10 inch long spine into Steve's chest where it punctured his heart. He pulled it out and died immediately afterwords. The spine has backward pointing serrations so pulling it out would have ripped a hole in his heart. It isn't clear that he would have lived if he left it in. I am sure he did it by reflex. It was freak accident and a horrible tragedy for his family and all of us fans who learned of his death.
Sting rays are usually very docile and one would have to injure them or frighten them in order to be at risk. They are so tame that tourists in the Caribbean are encouraged to visit places like Sting Ray city where they can feed them. I have participated in this kind of activity and was surrounded by swarms of stingrays and had no reason to be afraid.

Steve Irwin was one of the most compassionate animal activists in the world. He and his wife Terry lived in the Australia Zoo that was started by his father. He not only rallied to save crocs but all of the animals in australia. He died doing what he loved,for people he loved. Terri, Bendi ( his daughter) and baby Bob. Rip steve Irwin 1962-2006

He was a person who was very bored with just sitting around on a boat waiting for the weather to improve so decided he needed a bit of excitement
