ModernMerlin is correct.
It's called 'brake shift interlock'

If you have your foot on the brake & it still won't shift out of Park
There is an 'over ride' to the system.

Look in your owners manual.

If you don't have an owners manual, you can download one FREE from; http://ford.com

but basically it involves popping off the little, circular, plastic cap, located next to your shifter & unlocking it.

The 1999 Ford Escort has a safety device in which you must depress the brake pedal, before shifting the car out of Park.
Try telling him he his fat. LOL sorry.

Shift linkage or the transmission is damaged.

there is something wrong with your transmission, will have to get it fix, or get a new transmission
