i have no clue how to use my IPOD NANO. how do you get songs to download?

You can either legally buy songs from itunes which came with your software for the nano, or you can illegally download them from programs such as limwire(which can be found at www.download.com). Also, at websites like www.myspace.com/music and www.purevolume.com you can actually search a artist and listen to their music and download it (if the artist chose to have downloads). That's always an easy alternative to do, and you know the download will be good because you can listen to the song before! So, there are multiple methods, just choose one (or all!) and have fun listening to music on your nano!
