Most of the thugs in today's prisons would be too cowardly and undisciplined to cope with the life of a soldier. We like to think of our armies as "Our Best" - and I can't see a bunch of thieving scumbags would really live up to this ideal.

Don't see why they can't do military training or national service though because it might instill some self-respect and disclipine into them.

People (convicts or not) should only be sent to war for the defense of the country. The current war in Iraq is not to defend the U.S., it is a war for oil and money. The defense industry is HUGE and they do not make any money from peace.
Our country has to be at war at all times, because the defense-industrial complex demands that from the Bush junta. This unbearable, horrible, and disgusting time of peace during the Clinton years was traumatizing to the industry and their inherit greed.

meow 955 gave an ignorant [if not stupid] answer, suggesting that President Bush would send criminals to fight our wars.

Personally, I would like to see all first generation LEGAL immigrants be required to serve in the military for eight years, whether they are on the battlefield or emptying bedpans in the VA Hospitals. They need to pay for their freedom by knowing freedom requires sacrifice.

Prisons are for criminals. Criminals are in prison because they were convicted of a crime and are being punished.

I can see someone making the argument that non-violent offenders be given the VOLUNTARY OPPORTUNITY to accept an alternate sentence in non-battlefield CIVILIAN jobs on military reservations [emptying bedpans, taking out garbage, mowing lawns, scrubbing decks of dry-docked ships, scraping barnacles, painting barracks, etc.].

Mmmm, the one good thing about the UK armed forces is......
They are "all" volunteers, that is why we have the best Army, Navy, Air Force in the world. We may not be the biggest, but we "ARE" the best.
I would hate to see some scum basterd in any of our Armed Forces. It would be a disgrace to the best traditions and uniforms of this great country.
(ex-serviceman) :-)

No can't trust em' would have to keep to close and eye on them and many of the more derange ones might switch sides. Soldiers also must be sharped and disciplined how disciplined can they be if they landed themselves in jail.

No. While it's an attractive idea, it has one main flaw: Criminals don't make good soldiers. Soldiers need to be disciplined and organized, criminals are neither. They'd probably desert at the first opportunity.

If you do that, the only way to be safe is to take the prisoners to the country you are fighting, point out where the weapons are, tell them they can keep whatever as long as they kill everyone and run before they get to the guns.
