Geology is a very broad science... it is so much more than just rocks... Geology is the study of all aspects of the physical and biological earth both past and present. IN trying to decipher the history of the earth a geologist uses rocks because they are generally the only preserved record of the earths past...
They study the present, to better understand how things work today, from this you can help understand how they might have worked in the past.
IN trying to understand the earth, a geologist has to have some understanding of rocks.. but also of chemistry, physics, biology, mathematics, oceanography, geography. They dont need to be experts at all those, but certainly they will need some understanding of these.
Disadvantages ??
IN the US most of the current jobs for geologist are in environmental geology, some in oil exploration and academics.

The advantage of geologists is that they can advise you about rocks.
The disadvantage of geologists is that they usually smell bad.
OK, sorry about that smelling bad thing, but they are usually dirty.

The advantages: They can tell you things like do not to build a nuclear power plant on a fault. The disavantages: When you do things like build a nuclear power plant on a fault and an earthquake occurs on the fault, you can't blame them for your own stupidy.

I think that all depends on if you are one or not !
Well, not really.
How and where would we plan and extract fossil fuels ?
How would we know how to build earthquake safe structures ?
How would we know about eruptions ?
How would we know about Tsunami ?
How would we know about the fossil record ?
Do I need to go on !
