I lived outside the U.S for about 22 years. The attitude towards Americans then was pretty much as it is now... Too loud, over sexed and over here.
Americans are seen as loud mouthed know-it-alls. They are arrogant bullies who see nothing wrong with forcing their ideas and beliefs on the rest of the world... at gun point if necessary. Americans see nothing wrong with interferring in the affairs of a soverign foreign nation.
Americans make Europeans nervous because they don't know what an American President is going to do. I remember when Reagan was President and I was living in Bruxelles... I was MUCH more worried that He would push the button than Gorbychev.
When I am living outside the U.S I am VERY conscious of how the local feelings are towards the U.S. and I go out of my way to not look, act, talk or in any way, seem like an American... When I am outside the country I almost never use the American language, but stick with French or Spanish when possible and as appropriate.
American's are not popular just about anywhere in the world, so I avoid the "American Restaurants" or "American Shopping Malls" or any other "American" place where some group can set off a bomb or a rocket.
Now... when I post this type of thing, there is almost always the idiot who posts the usual "WELL IF YOU HATE AMERICA SO MUCH... THEN LEAVE IT"... let me tell you, before you can post that hatred message, I would be only too happy to leave the country and move back to Europe but, thanks to Ronald Reagan and the way he trashed the value of the dollar, my retirement income is less than half of what the value of it should be, so I can't afford to live anwhere but this country.

I like americans, i lived in the USA for a while and was with an american girlfriend ... i noticed that everyone is twice the size of europeans... the eating frenzies just get out of hand...
Also it is a shame that they dont teach world geography and history is US schools... the girlfriend i knew did not know a thing about any other countries, other than the USA. Oh, and the "God" thing ... way, way out of control... "national religious insanity" for want of a better phrase.
Generally i liked USA, girls in NYC are hot...

I lived in England for 3 years... a fair number of Europeans think of Americans as fat, simple-minded Bible thumping hypocrites.
Sorry if you were expecting another answer.
