Simple answer... it is the study of the earth, both past and present. That would include all aspects of the physcial and biological earth and as a science it is very broad including any sub disciplines or specialties:
Petroleum geology i.e. the oil business
Environmental Geology : Ground water, waste remediation
Paleontology Studying ancient life, i.e. fossils
Paleoclimatology studying ancient climates
petrology/mineralogy studying minerals and matierials
