My computer's red light is always on... does it indicate something is wrong?

My computer's red light is always on, the one that blinks when something is going on, the one usually next to the power key. Does it indicate that something is wrong with my computer?

Red Light means the activity of you're hard drive when it blinks it means your harddrive is active and processing something but if it doesn't blink it is on idle mode. A steady light means you're system froze or hanged it doesn't usually happen that much but if it does there is a problem. Check often your computer and post another question when it persists.

This is the usual way the LED Lights are set up.

Green is the power LED. This does nothing but stay on when your PC is turned on.

Red is showing activity on your PC. This means that your CPU is in the processing mode.

It is possible that you may have a runaway process. This is not a frequent situation but it can happen. Do the following just to see if something is in the runaway mode.

Hold down Ctrl + Alt + Delete
Only once because if you do it twice it will reboot your computer.

This will display the Windows Task Manager window.
Click on the PROCESSES tab at the top of the window.
Look at the column titled CPU
Scroll down and review the numbers in the CPU column. Most everything will read zero but a few may show up to 5% or so. And usually those numbers will fluctuate fairly quickly.
The key number is at the bottom and is called SYSTEM IDLE PROCESS. This will usually reflect 70 to 90% and is normal and what you should expect to see.

If you see an item in the CPU column that is running say at 10% or so or higher all the time, then it is probably a runaway process.

If you only need to shut down that Process for the moment, click on it in the Image Name column, and then click on End Process down at the bottom of the window.

You may need to uninstall and reinstall the software associated with that image name to rectify the cause of the problem.
Write down the Image Name. e.g. DKService.exe
You may or may not recognize the association to the software by the Image Name.
To find out what program the Image Name belongs to:
Click on Start > Search > For Files or Folders > All Files or Folders
Type in the Image Name and then click on Search
This will bring up the results window and you should easily be able to determine which Program it belongs to.
In the example I gave above, it belongs to Diskeeper which is a program to automatically defrag the hard drive.

Try uninstalling and reinstalling that Program.

One light indicate that power is turned on and other indicate that your computer is Busy. In my computer it is Green for Power and Red for Busy.

The solid light shows that your computer it turned on. The blinking light is your activity light. Nothing is wrong.
