wikipedia says,"Irony is a literary or rhetorical device in which there is a gap or incongruity between what a speaker or a writer says [or does], and what is understood" Example:
"Don't yell at me," screamed his brother. (The brother is doing the very thing he is asking not be done to him.) Ditto for hitting a child while telling him not to hit.
In the O. Henry short story, Gift of the Magi , the wife sells her hair to buy a gold watch fob for her husband's gold watch. Her husband , in turn, sells his treasured watch to purchase a fancy comb for his wife's hair. This whole story is an example of irony. The reader knows what is going on, but the characters do not.

Of course,you have only to read the newspaper, especially government and big business section to find many examples of irony.
For example, everytime the IRS attempts to "simplify the tax form" , it seems to take even more time to complete and figure out. That was not their intended outcome.

You may use irony all the time with your friends. If someone asks your opinion of a new outfit or amkes a suggestion about whch movie to see, you may SAY, " Great." At the same time you are rolling your eyes, smirking , pretending to gag, or using the tone of your voice to convey the exact opposite opinion.

she obviously skipped that day in English class. All of the examples of irony in her song are misguided. Irony is quite literally an incongruity between what is expected and what actually occurs - usually written for humour or satire.

A real example of irony would be something like a protester who is campaigning to save a forest being crushed by a falling tree

The Steve Irwin incident was considered irony.
He lived what he enjoyed doing best, getting up close and personal to some dangerous and non-dangerous animals. Then next thing you know, he gets stabbed in the heart from a sting ray. Talk about irony.
