You're right... a lot of the fun has gone out of television. The few comedies on the air fall short... I can't remember the last time I had a good belly laugh from any television show. I might smile, perhaps chuckle, but just not laugh out loud. The last show to make me laugh hard was Seinfeld.

More humor,,, No! Better humor,,,absolutely.
What TV needs the least of, is "Reality shows" that definitely are eveything but REAL.
The opposites you suggest, Comedy and Drama, obviously serve two purposes,,,and each occasionally slips into the other, even if only in small measure.
Comedy is obviously created to make us laugh, perhaps take our mind away from the omnipresent tragedies that engulf us every day. Bad comedy often numbs us and pushes us away.
Conversely,,,Drama wants to envelope us, hold our interest for what might be more than most peoples attention spans? It's design is to cause the viewer to actually have a feeling of involvement, and a relationship with characters and plot situations. Seriously deep drama might even help cause us to feel better about our own situations, than what we see portrayed.
Finally... and then I'll let you ponder,,, NEWS!
Very little that's labeled as NEWS, is in fact, any more. It's not Journalism, and is way close to not being "Reporting" Much is scripted, and embellished. TV News people have agents, makeup artists, cue card holders, etc, at their call. It's an abstract, often sensationalized form of Entertainment,,, yet many of us thrive on it.
I guess to add another personal opinion... Turn it off! Or don't turn IT on,,,OR be very specific in what programing you do watch. I feel fortunate to not have cable, and even more so to often have really poor TV reception.

Well it is true. The number and interests of sitcoms that have traditionally been loved have gone down. That is actually very sad, especially because it is being replaced with the things you have listed above. But I think we need sitcoms that have good, sensible humor. I dont like things that are corney funny or try much to hard or are vulgar. Smart sitcoms like Seinfield need to make a recurrance. Television and movies were made to take people away from the outside world. Back in the depression or WWII era, people had movies to go to. For two hours the could be taken away from all trhe heartache and drama of real life and simply relax. That needs to happen in these difficult times.

YES! There is so many different dramas, and I like to watch tv and unwind and laugh! That's why I watch a lot of animation, like King of the Hill, The Simpsons, Family Guy and South Park. And my fave regular comedy is My Name is Earl. That show is SOOOO funny!

I think TV needs to stop being so humerous. I'm mean if TV is met to relate to the end user. When you watch these little sitcoms you know every actor has their own character, you have the one's that are just stupid or outragous. It's like they're alway on point to do something ironic or dumb that is intended to be funny, but if you really think about it adults don't act that away. They don't put stuff on their heads or bust out singing jingles or just anything dumb like that.
I really enjoy The Office, because I think anyone can relate to that.

Simple humor is best. That answers another question that was posted here. "Why was Barney Fife so popular?" People are forgetting to have fun. Television is entertainment. The best entertainment is to laugh.

Very true- television isn't all about the weather and what's going in the world. It's also a place to escape reality. I turn on the t.v. and all I see is reality - I have enough reality.

Not really. If you want comedy watch a sitcom or a cartoon. If you want drama watch the O.C. and CSI.
