My hypothesis: 20's about discovery, 30's about refinement, what are the 40's about?

I would say the 40s are about engagement. You take on the world in your 40s. You are finally in your prime. You have the knowledge, the experience and the energy. The 50s are about transition. The 60s are reflection. The 70s wisdom. The 80s spreading your sails. :)

They call 40's middle age, because it is the time to be in between youth and old age. We look at how we spent our younger years and learn our lessons from that. Then we look forward to our later life and plan for it in a much more real way than we did before. 40's are about learning to be in control of our lives.

You need to start thinking about future security. Check on your investments and pension plan. See where your at and where you want to be.

I guess 40's are about getting your life in order.

Assessment. Deciding if you will take your life in a different, often dreamed of position, build a different fresh lifestyle, or just proceed in the same safe mode you've been traveling in.
