The lead to take on this is from the broadsheet newspapers (New York Times, Daily Telegraph, London Times etc). They tend to use serif fonts, things like Times, Times New Roman and Georgia.
Bear in mind that some companies also actually specify which fonts should be used in reports.
I work for a progressive publishing company (both print and new media). The fonts used in our magazines and websites are all Arial, Helvetica variants, so of course, all my reports are Arial.
The ones to avoid are 'cute-looking' fonts (you presumably want your report to be taken seriously), monospaced fonts like Courier (as they tend to make your report look childish) and handwriting or script fonts.
Times and Arial are both good choices.
