Doldrums is an old nautical term for an area of the ocean with no wind. The sailors would set for long periods of time unable to move or do much of anything. This meaning was transferred to a psychological condition meaning depression. The person is unable to up or down on the emotional scale. They are in the Doldrums.

Referring to a human being, its a colloquialism for being depressed. Its a very old expression; have not heard it for years. I think "doldrums" means calm winds on the ocean. If the winds are calm, there is no wind for the sails. My grandmother is the last person I heard use this expression and she was born in 1870.

the doldrums are a area with no wind that sailing ships got stuck in and had no way to move, so it means having no direction or ambition in a person

Geographically speaking, it is the equatorial ocean region of calms and light variable winds.
Literally, "In the Doldrums" means becalmed or depressed.

being down in the dumps, not doldrums... but it would mean the same thing... you are bummed out and/or depressed and feeling sad and sorry for yourself with or without a justifiable reason.

you hit rock bottom yet? you don't want to feel so down, you look up and see down. down in the doldrums, there are no words to say how that feels. you wake up to see another day, you just appreciate, because, down in the doldrums is knocking your head over and over and over, it's guilt, it's coulda', shoulda'.
you feel worse than the flu, death knocking, don't answer, hide, hide, don't do like me and hide for so long, no one knows who you are anymore...

Depressed; dull and listless. For example, Dean's in the doldrums for most of every winter. This expression alludes to the maritime doldrums, a belt of calms and light winds north of the equator in which sailing ships were often becalmed. [Early 1800s] Also see down in the dumps.

"I wrote a goodbye note in lipstick on your arm When you passed out I couldn't bring myself to call Except to call it quits Best friends Ex-friends till the end Better off as lovers And not the other way around" translates into he slept with a girl, left when she was sleeping, and they arent right for each other or he doesnst love her. they are just better off as lovers, and not friends. "The tombstones were waiting They were half-engraved They knew it was over Just didn't know the date" is the next part of the story. the two lovers knew that the relationship was nothing more than sex, and that soon it would end, but they didnt know when . "This is a love song in my own way Happily ever after below the waist" is again about the sex, obviously. lol to me, its a break up song. or to patrick, a love song in his own way. lol :D good song, btw
