you play phantasy star?
------
anyway, to your questions.
the world of FFI doesn't exist anywhere within the world/timeline of FFII.
the world of FFII doesn't exist anywhere within the world/timeline of FFIII
etc...
there is, however, a slight exception. in final fantasy tactics, as you travel, you "unearth" various things about the other games. these may make it seem like FFT was built on the same world as the other games, but they are only for reference purpose, because of how radically different the game is. also, aeris makes two appearances, and cloud is a playable character.
---------
the reason they are all called "final fantasy" is because that was the title of the game that almost caused them bankruptcy. but instead, the game SAVED the company.
----------
there are several things that are connected, however.
Gogo was in FFV, got trapped in a time distortion and is a playable character in FFVI
most of the games have someone named Cid that has something to do with airships
spell names generally evolve through the titles. FIR3 from I becoming FIRAGA on VIII
monster names (and usually looks) also are constants, but since they are mostly pulled from real world mythology, that's ok.

Cid is not necessary name for the Airship, for what I knew, Cid is the name that used most frequent in Final Fantasy series, perhaps is the favorite name for Square Enix (formally known as Squaresoft) for some reason, For example Cid was used in Final Fantasy VII as one of the character name (airship known as Highwind), Cid is the headmaster of Balamb Garden in Final Fantasy VIII, Cid is the professor and the mentor of Aki Ross in Final Fantasy The Spirit Within, and so on...
But for the timeline, as what the rest mentioned above, they were not so related to each other. However the guardian forces or summons did carries from time to time for example Odin is actually a boss in the early Final Fantasy, when the player defeated him, he vowed to the player that he will answer the player call for the rest of his life... cool... :) Same goes to Ifrit and Shiva, I think they met each other quite sometime, if you notice in Final Fantasy VIII when you get into the fire cavern to confront with Ifrit, once you summon Shiva, Ifrit will scream "They have Shiva!!!".... sound like he knows about her....

The final fantasy games are all on different worlds (with the exception of X and X-2), and have no interrelation except for the same basic plot and monsters. lol.
VII has two prequels (Before Crisis & Crisis Core) and a sequel (Dirge of Cerberus) that takes place three years after VII.
