Well, you will need to have your printer/fax machine hooked up
to your telephone line in order to send a fax...
That is the only way I know of...
Once it is hooked up to the phone, you type up your message
on screen and you need the other person or company's fax number...
Then you send the fax by clicking on send fax...
It is really simple once you have everything hooked up and working...
Now the only problem with this is that every time the phone
rings, you might have your fax machine pick up and answer
with fax beeping sounds...
You will have to adjust your settings so that it is not the default service you use...
Otherwise you may never be able to use your phone line as a regular phone line...
Once you send the fax, unless you are expecting to receive
one in return, you will need to adjust your settings so it will not
always be answering your phone...
Unless you have a dedicated line for the fax and a separate one
for the phone...
Lots to consider...

Did you "configure" the Fax capability when you installed the printer?
If so, let me give you this example:
- create a Word document
- cl File, Save as and give it a name if you want to keep a record of it.
- cl File, cl Print
- the FAX should appear in the list of printers. Select it.
- you enter appropriate information and send
Sounds like you don't have a FAX address list. You will need that.
You will also have to spend some time with the User's Guide and pay attention to the configuration you set.
Mine drove me crazy until I learned that when a FAX failed, it sat in the outbox ready to go next time I powered on. If I did not have the FAX printer selected at that time, my system hung until I restarted and very quickly grabbed the icon for the FAX console so I could delete the Fax from the outbox. (Remember, I had a copy on file.) I learned to remove a failed fax from the FAX outbox before I powered off.
Your FAX may not work this way. I have no way of knowing. As I said, you will have to study your literature. Good luck.

If you don't have a land line, I doubt that you can make or receive faxes. If you do have a land line, you need a telephone connection. Perhaps, you can get a plug from an electronic store that can split the connection from a nearby phone to add a line to your printer. The details of the connection to your printer should be available in your manual.
Good luck.

Check for software and a manual on the canon printer website. You didn't mention the model of your printer so I cannot look it up for you.
