I have built a 383 motor before and you cant hone it to get to 383 cubic inches, also you have to put a 3.75" stroker crank in it to get to a 383,plus bring it to a machine shop and have the cylinders bored you also must use the stock lenght rods.

A 383 is not overbored more than what's needed to deal with wear - it's a stroker, meaning that you leave the bores the same and put in a crank from a Chevy 400 (or, more commonly these days, an aftermarket crank). If you tried boring a 350 out to 383 cubes with the stock stroke, you would probably cut through the cylinder walls and into the water jacket.

A flex hone won't work...You need to take the engine block to a machine shop to do that. There are other aspects to getting the bore right for the 383, and let alone, you might be there for months doing this with a flex hone(not hore). All the flex hone is good for, is giving you a finish grind for prepping that block. Good luck.

A hone is only meant to smooth the cylinder wall to it's final finish. Boring must be done on a specialized milling machine that will keep every thing square and aligned during the boring process. To get to 383 cubic inches you will need to get a special crank, rods and pistons. To get that many cubes from a 350 you'll need a longer stroke as well as a slight over bore.

This is best to be done by a machine shop.. You don't want to do this your self.. Take it to someone who does this type of work.. My last motor I put in a 71 Monte Carlo was a 383.. The machine shop can mill everything to the block that has to be done..And you are not just boring the motor, you have to get the new crank and connecting rods for the pistons and pistons.. Hope you bought a kit. It is best to have the machine shop do this so the motor will be balanced or you will have nothing but problems..

in case you have the two-bolt significant variety small block, its appropriate in case you utilize this engine as a center and purchase a 383 short block, for all the machining and bits you ought to place into it. basically positioned, the 383 short blocks are growing to be to the factor the place they're extra competitively priced. 500 hp would be troublesome in case you attempt to "exterior build" the 383. you ought to have the engine blueprinted, align honed - the full 9 yards, and that's the place your expenses would be slightly prohibitive. in case you're ineffective set on it, you ought to talk over with an area machinist or engine builder, and bypass from there - they're going to possibly choose a say interior the areas they're going to be working with, and could have some sage advice to furnish you.

If you are going to do this with one of those flexible stone deals chucked into a drill, call into work and tell them you might miss a week, because its going to take a while! A 383 has a bore of 4.030".
