The make a scratch crayon that fills in the scratch, you can find it at places like Walmart then use Liquid Gold over the top of that so that you don't see the scratch any-longer. Liquid gold only puts color back in the scratch it doesn't fill it if its got any depth to it.

I use linseed oil...
pour a little onto the scratch and rub it out with cheese cloth...
a little more, then I lay the cheese cloth over it...and steam it with a hot iron.
The wood swells up with the moisture and doesn't crack because the oil is protecting it.
