Hi. Thanks for such an interesting question. I know a lot of smarter people are going to give technical answers, but I think your question needs to be opened up to consider cultural answers. So I would say that the cultural invention of monogomy for child rearing was a critical turning point. See what I mean. Like language and religion they have their roots in cultural change.

The computer has made the most significant change in the number of people at one time.
The automobile has made the most significant change in the number of people over the generations and making it possible for the computer to evolve.
We would not have computers if the wheel was not invented.

This changes with time, I think. As time passes, more and more inventions make life easier for humans.The most obvious answer is the wheel, then the discovery of fire. next the generation of electricity, the telephone, television, quality medicine, computers and electricty have doen their bit as time moved ahead.

electricity has changed the way we live, but i dont think that the utilization of electricity can be classified as an invention... i would say the telephone

My answer would be the internet. You could not have it without electricity, but it still amazes me the amount of resources you have at your fingertips. My grandparents were amazed at airplanes& microwaves, but they would be on the internet had they lived to see it.
