Do the people of the USA measure liquid in pints? We in the UK measure milk and beer in pints. A pint is equal to 20 fluid ounces.

The reason I ask is because I was astounded to learn that the US gallon is someway short of an imperiel gallon. There are eight pints (or 160 fluid ounces) in an imperiel gallon. How do you measure your gallons?

Is liter the correct US spelling of litre?

Right then. 2 US pints = 1 US quart.
8 US pints = 1 US gallon.
4 US quarts = 1 US gallon

THEREFORE, 16 fluid oz = 1 US pint (uk 20 fl. oz)

32 fl. oz = 1 US quart (40 fl. oz = 1 UK quart)

128 fl. oz = 1 US gallon (160 fl. oz = 1 UK gallon).

SO. US pints, quarts and gallons are short measures of imperial pints, quarts and gallons?

I can't understand the metric system either. Nobody wanted it here in the first place, but non-the-less, it was foisted upon us. In fact a greengrocer here was convicted of selling bananas in pounds and ounces!

The Laws of England are stupider than you think. It isn't illegal to SELL bananas in pounds and ounces because a buyer can ask for 2lb 3oz of bananas, if s/he likes, and trust what you hand over. It isn't illegal to buy bananas in pounds and ounces, either, wholesale or retail. The Wicked Offence that the greengrocer was hounded for, and prosecuted for, was WEIGHING them in pounds and ounces. People were actually SEEING that they got the right amount but the Asinine Law said they shouldn't be allowed to understand what they were buying. It is a deep shame to us Geordies that we didn't back this bloke to the hilt and storm the stupid City Council, or something.

A pint in U. S. measure is 16 ounces. A quart bottle of oil says .965 litre. Don't know where or when the difference started, but it can be confusing. I run spellcheck and litre was spelled lit er, lit-er, and liter. I use litre. Spell check don't know how to spell.

If you are interested, read this article on U. S. weights and measures and see if it confuses you as much as the metric system does me. It all depends on what you were brought up with that you understand the best.

In the U.S. a Pint {16 ounces} is half a Quart which is a quarter of a Gallon {128 fluid ounces}. Due to the Metric system we spent many school days converting from unit to unit.

I like the U. S. spelling of "liter" as it fits with our spelling of "meter".

Yes, liter is the correct US spelling.

And yes, people in the USA measure liquid in pints, quarts and gallons (with the appropriate "halfs" thrown in). A pint is shy of 0.5 L, roughly 473 mL. There are two pints to a quart - 946 mL, and four quarts to a gallon - a US gallon is roughly 3.78 L.
