It doesn't seem to have a specific origin, just used to speak badly of someone who walked with a limp and perpetuated through generations. Gimp is a Dutch word that means 'twisted, reinforced material used in upholstery trimming' so I guess someone used the word to describe a twisted leg?

some suggest that it is a corruption of the words gammy and or limp used to refer to a lame limb or feeble person. (USA 1920s)
another older meaning:
• noun 1 twisted, reinforced material used as upholstery trimming. 2 (in lacemaking) coarser thread forming the outline of the design. 3 fishing line made of silk bound with wire.

— ORIGIN Dutch.
