I think it depends on the situation and the person. If I am the one getting the hug, I prefer both arms under their arms. If I am doing the hugging and it's to console someone, it would usually be both arms over their shoulders and If it's a Hi I haven't seen you in so long kind of hug, I would probably use the one arm over/one arm under method, if there is a method for hugging. I guess I've never thought about it before, but hugs are GREAT any way you can get them! I love hugs, don't you?

man to man puts one arm over their shoulder, the other under the other arm.

man to woman put both arms around their upper arms (bicep area).

I'm a full frontal body hug type of gal. I usually prefer my arms over, even though it means I usually have to get up on my tiptoes. But it really depends on how tall the other person is, and who initiates the hug.

Never thought about it before but, right arm over, left arm under. I wonder it that's like lacing your fingers together. The way your thumbs land, which ever one's on top, is inherited from one of your parents.
