how do i set up the wireless card, i'm lost when it comes to this sort of thing................

Hmm. Do you have a CD that comes with your wireless card?
I've just managed to set up my laptop with my new wireless card today. I installed the software and driver with the CD.
If you have not set your router and wireless network to be a private one, your wireless card on your laptop should be able to detect the network, once it is installed.
Since you've set up your router, you should know of your network name as well.
What brand are you using for your wireless card and router, may I know? If you're using Linksys ( http://www.linksys.com ), they've got pretty good Live Support Chat with their support team. They've helped me set up the network.
Do refine your question and tell us more about the hardware you've purchased, such as the model name and the network name, etc.
