My parents car is about a 1990 model. It is a Mazda. This morning it would not start so I tried to give it battery from my car. The car still would not start.
It is now on my parents driveway and when they attempt to start it, you can hear it trying and then it makes a "boom" sound. They don't have road side assistance so they are trying to figure out what it wrong and fix the problem themselves, my dad is pretty handy. Any suggestions on what the problem could be? They only ever drive it around town so it has low mileage and looks great.

Test for a spark by pulling a spark-plug out and holding close to something grounded...a bracket maybe. Keep it attached to the wire of course. Crank the engine; if you see a spark, Then it is not the ignition module(the module controlls spark). It might be a worn timing belt or fuel pump.
For fuel pump:
Find the fuel line at the fuel(injector) rail.
Disconnect it, then turn the key to ACC. No need to crank the engine, the fuel pump is electric. If you get fuel, the pump is good. If not,the pump is in the tank;pull it and replace it.
For timing:
Find top-dead-center(TDC).
Locate the camshaft pulley(s)
Check the timing marks, it/they should align. If not, then it's a worn timing belt.( do a search on the make/model and year of the auto,on line. That should help you find the info you need regarding timing.) Or get a Haynes Manual @ autozone
When you get it running, sell it to me...

Seems like its on the ignition part of the engine...Meaning there is probably a weak spark, or no spark at all. The boom is most likely the back fire from the fuel kind of burning in the exhaust itself. Might be an ignition module, if so equipped, or could be a bad coil, or is in need of a cap and rotor, and worse yet wires. Hope these help some. Good luck.

The starter might be bad. Does dad know where the starter is ? He'll need to give it a whack with a hammer or something while someone else tries to start the car. The main problem is it's a Mazda....
