It is probably clams, but there are also some really cool looking worms that can cause that. Clams (and oysters and other similar shell fish) are filter feeders. They suck in ocean water and have a kind of filter system that filters out tiny animals or plants, etc that are in the water. Then they squeeze out the water in a little spurt. In colonial days when the English first came to New England, they used to complain about walking on the beach because there were so many clams, and they were so big, that you would walk down the beach and by the time you got a little distance the squirting clams would have soaked you with clam spit! hahahahah!

They are clams and they spit out that water because there shell fills up with water when they open it to dig under the sand and so they spit it out. :)
