but i'm trying to make an 'or' symbol and it doesn't work.

I don't have Nano myself, normally I use Vim. You could try using the Pico text editor. They are essentially the same editor and I tried typing the pipe character. It works.

havent used nano but usually its the left shift character and the character to the right of this.
