Pros: You're getting published.

Cons: It's expensive; an actual publishing house accepting a book won't charge you a dime. Distribution is difficult; Amazon is close to the only way to sell self-published books anymore, unless you're looking at a local interest type that's purposely self-published for distribution in a small area (and then you have to have an area/stores that will help and carry your book). Finally, there's a bit of a stigma attached to self-publishers; the idea of "if a publisher wouldn't accept it, why should I read it?" which is of course not a very good attitude...but often proves itself.

My suggestion would be to try publishers first, UNLESS it's an aforestated local interest book, or a purposely limited-run chapbook.

This is what is known as Vanity Publishing. Anyone, if they have the money can publish any old rubbish they like.

Pros: You see your book and your name in print.

Cons: It isn't real, no book shop will carry the book for you, there will be no particular sales - if you want to sell, then you have to do it yourself.

If you have written a novel and want to get it published, you will have to join the race of approaching selected publishers. Don't forget Ian Fleming (who wrote James Bond) was rejected over 70 times before a publisher would take him on !!

well one major pro is that it is a lot cheaper and theres no chance of the publisher, being you, rejecting your work. So, you will get your work published. The downside is marketing. If you want to make money on your novel you need to sell it. Without a publisher or an agent this could prove difficult.

Well the cons are the cost and it might be hard to get stores to carry your novel. Pros... well self-fulfillment! And you'll learn from the process.
