Make sure the roof has been painted flat black, to absorb as much of the suns rays as possible. It's not much, but it's something. Next, brush on a brine solution before cold weather arrives. Allow it to dry, do it several times. Get it good and salty. Again, not a cure, but it should have a positive impact.

Insulate your attic better. You really shouldn't be getting ice on your roof. Ice can form from heat escaping from your house and melting the snow on your roof. Check how much insulation you have and if it's not up to the recommended R-value standard for your area, add more. You should be able to get a tax deduction for this as well as lower your heating costs.

put salt on the roof how good is that for the roof and the yard below. Clean your gutters and trim back any trees that shade the roof. Mother nature will take care of most of it if your roof was shingled properly and maintained it should not be a problem. I could be your next door neighbor and I do not see it as a great problem

..and adding to the answer above..there are special deicing wires that can be place along the roof during winter that can ba activated to melt the ice..check your local Home Depot.

there are some heater cords available that you put on the lower edge of the roof in a zig zag pattern
