If alternate universes do exist and touch occasionally due to string theory are ghosts just images we are catching a glimpse of where they touch.

I would just like to point out that I didn't say that ghosts do exist but if you listen to prominent proffessors including Michio Kaku ( hope I spelt that correct) they say they is no reason why alternate universes cannot and would not exist.

I also would think that intelligence is based on rationality and not ruling anything out without solid proof of existance or not So I tend to have an open mind till someone proves me wron.

I like the way you think, Lynn. It goes along with what I have thought about for a long time. How can someone say, with complete certainty, that ghosts do not exist? I believe a true scientist would have to say that it is not possible to prove that ghosts don't exist. Therefore, while they might not "believe" they exist, it is possible they do.

Now, to the concept of what they are if they do exist. I think, again, a true scientist would be more likely to believe your theory that ghosts are some form of trans-dimensional being rather than the supernatural beings that most people think of when they talk about ghosts. I have always thought of the supernatural as being a way for people to try to explain what we don't understand with modern science.

Extending that theory, though, wouldn't it be interesting if "heaven" was simply another set of the theoretical 11 dimensions that scientists believe exist and that God, whatever form you may follow, was a being from these extra dimensions that has been able to travel between the different dimensions? Maybe this also would explain the Big Bang. Wouldn't that change the way we look at religion?

I would like for all of the people who have dismissed Lynn's argument out of hand to read a book called "Flatland: a romance of many dimensions" by Edwin Abbott. It is something of a thought experiment to get you into thinking about how beings who live in a certain dimension scheme, would observe beings who live in a higher dimension scheme. It helps conceptualize Lynn's argument and give an idea of how these trans-dimensional beings might be seen by us and how they might be able to interact with our world. A lot of things that we have always dismissed as supernatural could be explained by the extra-dimensional beings.

The book was written in 1884, which is remarkable since it is still a very useful text. It also means that it is outside its copyright in the United States and, therefore can be copied for free. You can read or download it at the Project Gutenberg site at this link http://www.gutenberg.org/etext/201

By the way, as a little plug for Project Gutenberg and my alma mater, the University of Illinois, there are many books that are available here to download, all completely legally. Any book written by an author that has been dead for at least 50 years is considered public domain and may have been transcribed at this site. The have over 19,000 books including those by; Edgar Allen Poe, Shakespeare, H. G. Wells, Arthur Conan Doyle, Herman Melville, Mark Twain, Jane Austin and many more. Check it out. http://www.gutenberg.org/wiki/Main_Page

Also, by the way, Matt, a major part of scientific theory is that we prove as much as we can but, in the end, we can never prove everything so we come up with a theory to try to explain the rest. It is then up to everyone to try to prove the rest or come up with a better theory. We don't have a lot of evidence to prove how the universe began but, based on what we know and a pretty extensive theory, we "believe" it happened a certain way. There are many universally accepted scientific concepts that cannot be proven yet with actual, hard evidence. Much of what Einstein worked on that he became so famous for was not proven until after he put out his theories.

Maybe Not Miss....We Interpret The Paritcles Of Light To Take Many Forms, And As You Know Every Single Particle From Dust To Water Haver There Unquie Propreites......

They Are All Living Beings But Are Thus Able To Interact With Other Particles That Some Times, us Humans That Can Express The Neruos In Our Brain Through Lanuguage Can Create All Kinds Of Ideas

People Such As Preist's, Psychics And Other Paranormal Activist Are Played On These For Thousands Of Years

We All Know That Light Is Unquie And Can Trick The Mind, untill The Mind - Telling Yourself It Was A Ghost Will Only Reinforce The Idea And You Will Then Pass This On Later In Life

STOP THE CYCLE AND DISCOVER THE PLANETS FIRST

I've thought about this alot and I certainly believe it is possible. Maybe not plausible. Undoubtedly most of the "paranormal" experiences recorded are hoaxes or coincidences, however, experimental physicists can prove the existence of alternate universes through simple experiments that you yourself can do at home. They know that through a simple demonstration with light, they can consistently prove the interaction of these universes with our own, by physically showing the particle interference predicted in the theories of quantum mechanics. This oddity was easy to explain away as wave cancellation until it was discovered that light (infact all matter as well) is actually a particle (photon) and a wave. More precisely, a particle that moves as a wave. It has been suggested that since this interference always happens the same way, that means that there are most likely other ways that phenomenon always interact with our reality as well. Exploiting this law of nature may be the next big step in theoretical physics, possibly the biggest step yet.

I doubt it. In my (very limited) experience, the type of people that have experiences with the paranormal seem to be the type of people that look for these types of experiences, or are into some degree of spiritual deviance. Also, if your theory held true, things like Poltergeists, which have only ever been recorded around girls aged between 11 and 16, would require some further reason beyond 'overlapping'.

If the most dramatic tales of the paranormal are to be believed, then I don't think alternate dimensions could expain the experiences, as the ghosts seem to have a distinct agenda, namely to scare the living bejesus out of the people they're haunting.

An interesting posit though.

being a scientist myself, i would agree that you cannot rule anything out. just because someone cannot prove something, doesnt mean it doesnt exist.

i like the theory of this and i can honestly say that i cannot prove you right or wrong.

another theory is that "ghosts" could actually be future/past echos of where the fabric of time and space is 'damaged' and you can actually witness alternate realities in the 4th dimension (i.e. things from the past or future). if this is the case, could this be replicated by travelling close to the speed of light like they did in the Red Dwarf episode called 'future achos'????

however, the theory which you talk about would involve the 5th dimension which woukld suggest that the ghost that i would see could theorically be me from another dimension. have there ever been reports of people seeing ghost that looked like themselves or someone that they know to be alive????

im not actually proving you right or wrong, im just throwing a few other theories/variables on the table.

A problem with your idea about being open-minded is that it assures that almost everything you accept will be wrong. I can think of an infinite number of completely bogus things, as long as I dont have to provide proof for them. If I have to provide proof, then the list of things I can tell you about is very much shorter, but also, very much more likely to be connected to reality.
In science (since this is the science part of the website) the standard is that whenever someone comes up with an idea, it is up to them to provide convincing proof that their idea is correct. It is not up to other people to prove them wrong.
So, the answer to original question is, there isnt one iota of evidence that ghosts are from other universes.

I believe in God and I think I believe in ghosts after having a few experiences, there are a few people saying "no, ghosts don't exist" even though they have no proof, but in saying that it can go both ways..there is no right answer as such..yet, i already thought about different "planes" etc and it really does give you something to think about .. all the possibilities.. but everyone is entitled to their own opinion.

Wow, this is really thought provoking...I think it may be a possibility, like in the movie Pulse. From most of what I have seen, a lot of paranormal activity is something like a emotional imprint video. What this means is that when an emotionally charged event occurs, it imprints it self on the surrounding bits of reality. It will then "replay" whenever it is triggered, very gradually weakening until we can't notice it anymore and it goes away.
