When people argue, the major points are mostly about morality. Religion is just a shorthand way of talking about morals. When people say "I was raised to believe..." or "Where I come from, we say..." they are talking about their personal morality and putting a name on their religion is usually the shortest and easiest route to letting other people know about a whole set of beliefs.
It is a matter of how we choose to define ourselves. Some people want to look for commonalities and others want to define themselves by what their differences are. I like to look for commonalities among different belief-sets and then I can see personal qualities in their own light. A person from any religious background could be loving or hateful, generous or selfish, caring or careless, a good listener or not, someone who could forgive or someone who will hold a grudge. So religions become shortcuts to communication for people who don't want to take the time for real communication. And sometimes, just excuses for bad behavior. The basic choice is still whether or not to respect our fellow humans.

Religion is linked to how many people were raised and people hold for values, morals and ethics; which then tie to alot of other things like politics and social standards. Religion is personal so people feel that if some is attacking their religious beliefs, they are attacking them.
