The polygraph (NOT lie detector) is used by investigators to help in the investigation process. It measures respiration rates, heart rate, and even very small changes in the amount of sweat you produce while being asked certain questions. It is far more structured than you see on TV, but is just one tool that police use.

Whether you pass or fail is meaningless in court. It just gives investigators an idea of whether you are being truthful. A good examiner can figure out if people have taken a Valium, have a tack in their shoe, or any other of the so called beat-the-polygraph systems.

As far as the other things you mentioned, I don't think any police agencies use them.

It amazes me how people are so quick to point the finger at her parents. Since when was the british press a reliable, unbiased source of information? So far the facts are few and far between on this case - the only solid fact is that Madeline is missing and that should be the only thing that matters at the moment. Find the poor girl - whether she be alive or dead - and then find the people who did this and punish them severely. I haven't seen the police reports. I don't know the McCann's - therefore I can only assume that they are innocent until proven guilty. Perhaps rather than wasting time making possibly slanderous accusations regarding the childs parents - the press and the portugeuse police force should put their efforts into finding the 4 year old little girl who should now be in her 11th week of school and should be excited about father christmas coming - who instead may be lying dead or who is being held captive and possibly being abused.
