This is a tough question because my dad was very much that way. And most of the time you are powerless to do anything. In fact my Doctor told me "your dad will always be the way he is, it's you who will have to change". He went through counseling, to no avail, took anti-depressants which helped at times, drank, which never helped anything.
I would make an appointment with the family doctor, and privately have a talk with him. If nothing else, he can make you feel more at ease and give you suggestions on what would and wouldn't work in helping your dad.
Best wishes from someone who has been there.

First of all I believe your Dad should go to the doctor for a physical examination. The body will not heal itself very well in a state of depression. He possibly could have alot of inflammation in his back which requires strong anti-inflammatory meds to get rid of the inflammation. He possibility needs to be on anti- depressant medication too. His headaches could be a result of the elevated blood pressure along with drinking which, the blood pressure can be controlled with medications too. All things considered these things you stated don't get better unless they are treated by a good physician.

Depression? You can buy SAM-E or St. John's wort at the drugstore. Both work. Try the SAM-E first. It takes care of achy muscles AND depression.
High blood pressure? There's medication, but diet and exercise are the place to start.
Beer? That's bad. If he drinks a lot, nothing else will happen. Try going to a local al-anon and talk to other people whose parents and loved ones are alcoholics. Your father may be.

The beer is not OK because of the blood pressure problem. Just show your dad minor, daily acts of kindness such as making him a cup of tea, asking what he'd like for lunch. If he makes a habit of saying he doesn't want any lunch, just don't ask him but make him some lunch anyway and just call him saying "Dad! Lunch is ready!" Ask him to come out for walks with you in the fresh air. Don't tell him you are worried about him or say you are trying to help him as that might upset him and make him feel like a burden. Just tell him you like his company and would like him to come for a walk with you. Is there anything he used to like doing, or anything he's good at or knowledgeable about that you could ask his advice about? I think it would help your dad to feel useful again. Has he retired recently? I've heard that retirement can come as a shock to a man who's worked all his life, robbing him of a sense of structure and usefulness. It might do your dad the world of good to know that you still need him.

All kinds of ailments can come from depression, i.e. the back pain may be a result of the depression.
Cognitive Behaviour Therapy can be effective in treating depression, success rate is about 50% I think so might want to look into that.
There's also a thing called the Hoffman Process, Google it find out more

Don't worry about the beer, that's okay.
Take him out places frequently before he becomes agoraphobic too. If you can get him to walk short distances and then longer ones, up to a half hour at a time, that would be excellent. The simple act of daily walking will cure his depression, clear his headaches, and lower his blood pressure.
But it will increase his appetite for beer, so tack on a stop at a olace to imbibe at the end of the walk, or bring a bottle or two along for him to have when the walk is over.
He'll be a happy camper in no time!

the beer just feeds the depression. High blood pressure is from worry. The pians all over are from "carring all the weight of these problems". You can't help him unless he wants help, and pride will make that even harder. Assure him of your love, and pray for understanding for him.

First talk to your dad about how you feel, then try to solve his problems, i would suggest ways to help him. My be he would benefit from a change in his life style with more exercise and better eating. Walk more and get fresh air try to reduce the beer = sugar intake as this may be why he is depressed and has headaches.
Join some clubs and socialise with other people who can help him and you. Speak to your local Doctor who may suggest other options try Internet better health or better living.
Good luck with it.
