The only appropriate use for colon cleansing is in preparation for a medical examination of the colon.

Your colon normally eliminates waste material and bacteria and absorbs water and sodium to maintain your body's fluid and electrolyte balance. Some colon-cleansing programs disrupt this balance and can be harmful by causing dehydration and salt depletion.

To help prevent constipation, eat plenty of fiber. The Institute of Medicine offers these daily recommendations:

* 38 grams for men and 25 grams for women 50 and younger
* 30 grams for men and 21 grams for women 51 and older

Also, drink plenty of water, which helps fiber work more effectively.

A colonic may be good for you, depending on what condition you'd like to change. Do you feel bloated? Do you have an expanded waistline? Do you have problems eliminating?

If constipation is the problem, then there are many natural ways to improve elimination. Increasing water intake, and eating more fiberous foods is a start; being more active (walking) helps too.

If you think that cleaning your colon might improve your health, then you might first look into colon/detox cleanses. These products cleanse the colon with natural herbs. A search for "colon cleanse" yields a large number of heavily advertised products with many testimonials.

In summary, I'd find a local holistic health practitioner and ask their advice about getting a colonic.

P.S. You'll find that the mainstream healthcare system takes a dim view of colonics. Just recognize that their paradigm (worldview) is slow to accept unorthodox ideas, it's the way science progresses. Don't take it personally!

Colon therapy is the process of cleansing and flushing out the colon, or large intestine. Also called colonic irrigation or colonic hydrotherapy, the treatment is similar to an enema but more extensive. Whereas an enema (which you can do yourself) bathes only the lower portion of the colon, colonic irrigation (which must be done by a trained practitioner) attempts to clean the entire--roughly five-foot--length.

I don't know much about it. It's supposed to be some kind of natural medicine. But I've never seen an animal stick a pipe up its behind, so it can't be too natural.

I've heard that it can be good for you in moderation. It's not supposed to be used for weight loss etc... Some people celebs use it for that reason, but if you do it too much you can loose too many elecrolytes and become dehydrated.
