Many people seem to be referring to many internet "browsers". I know only one, the one that came with my computer, MS Internet Explorer. I've just been wondering whether there are any others and, if so, what purpose do they serve, if IE already gets onto the so-called "information superhighway".

There are lots of different web browsers for example Microsoft Internet Explorer, Mozilla Firefox, Apple Safari, Netscape, and Opera, Wikipedia has a complete list with comparisons (see my sources).

Internet explorer, has has recieved a lot of criticism for not being very secure in its default state, (although it is getting better).

For the reason some people suggest using an alternative browser that has less known security issues. Under windows the alternatives come in three different categories:
1) Browsers based on Internet explorer eg Maxthon
2) Mozilla based eg FireFox
3) Opera

As well as claiming to be more secure, these other browsers have some features that are not found in the current version of Internet explorer eg tabs.

The good thing is that most browsers are free so I would suggest that you try several and see what works best for you. As you are already used to Internet explorer it might be worth trying maxthon first as it is very similar to Internet explorer.

Just as a Word Processor displays documents or an email program displays emails the purpose of the browser is to display web (internet) pages.

You run Microsoft Windows and it came with Microsofts web browser already installed so that's the one you've used, there are so many other browsers you really could't count them. Microsoft Internet Explorer isn't a very good one either! It's prone to virus, spyware, malware, this ware and that ware. It has more holes in it than a swiss cheese.

Most people wouldn't trust it with their bank account.
